Help info for using irc://irc.indymedia.org/
The easiest way to get on IRC is to use this web interface: https://irc.indymedia.nl/
Contents
Basic Commands
Rooms are generally called channels.
Join a room (create it if it doesn't exist):
/join #roomname /j #roomname
Get a list of all channels on the server:
/list
Start a private conversation (on some clients this will open a new window):
/msg nickname hello, how are you..
Change your nickname:
/nick newnickname
Set up an autoresponder when you are away:
/away This is my message while I am away
Type /away again to turn it off.
To leave a server and end you session:
/quit
Registering
Registering is not necessary or compulsory for the use of chatrooms. However, you can register your nickname in order to "secure" its usage.
If you register your nickname then you can also request a cloak for your IP address in irc://irc.indymedia.org/#ircd for example ask the operators, "can you set a cloak for my nick to occupytogether.org".
To get help on registration commands:
/msg NickServ help
Ranks / Functions
You might see some people with @ signs or + signs before their nicknames. People with @ signs are operators of the channel. They are there to maintain a civilized discussion: they have the necessary privileges to change the topic of the channel, kick or even ban people in case things get really nasty. People with + signs are users granted "voice". Voice is only relevant in moderated chatrooms, where only people with "voice" can speak in public.
